January Member’s Meeting
Posted in Meetings on January 10, 2011 by flyfishidahoJust a quick reminder that the first member’s meeting for 2011 will happen on Thursday, January 20. Wayne Pickerell will be tying flies starting at 6:30pm and the general meeting will begin at 7:00pm.
The meeting will be held in the Trophy Room at Idaho Fish & Game Headquarters (600 Walnut St, Boise) and the public is invited.
It is now time to renew your membership for 2011. Just like a fishing license your FFI membership is good for the calendar year. The January meeting is a great time to renew that membership and it helps the club in our financial planning for the coming year to get those memberships paid sooner rather than later. It will also ensure that you continue to have full access to the website as well as the newsletter.
Fly of the Month – The Royal Treatment
Posted in General on December 10, 2010 by flyfishidaho
Joel LaFollete designed this beautiful fly as part of his Peacock Series of Steelhead flies. The first time I tied this fly it looked like a steelhead fly that may be a little to artistic to be a practical fishing fly. After further consideration I tied up two more, to add to my first fly, and took them to the Grand Ronde on my next outing. After fishing through a few runs with my standard arsenal I brought this fly out of the clip-box.
I won’t BS you and try to convince you that the first time I cast it I hooked up but I did notice the fly had all the character of great steelhead flies: great profile, great color, swims well in the water, etc.
I think on top of everything else, it looks beautiful and it also looks like it takes hours to tie. That simply isn’t the case. The choice of peacock sword for throat and wing give it a very ‘rich’ look with significantly less effort at the vice than you would imagine.
The Royal Treatment
Hook: Daicchi 2151 (downeye)
Tag/Butt: Gold tinsel & purple floss
Tail: Peacock neck feather
2nd Butt: Peack Herl
Body: 1/3 purple floss & 2?3 purple yarn ribbed with gold tinsel
Hackle: Purple guinea & peacock body
Throat & Wing: Peacock sword
