January Member’s Meeting

Posted in Meetings on January 10, 2011 by flyfishidaho

Just a quick reminder that the first member’s meeting for 2011 will happen on Thursday, January 20.  Wayne Pickerell will be tying flies starting at 6:30pm and the general meeting will begin at 7:00pm.

The meeting will be held in the Trophy Room at Idaho Fish & Game Headquarters (600 Walnut St, Boise) and the public is invited.

It is now time to renew your membership for 2011.  Just like a fishing license your FFI membership is good for the calendar year.  The January meeting is a great time to renew that membership and it helps the club in our financial planning for the coming year to get those memberships paid sooner rather than later.  It will also ensure that you continue to have full access to the website as well as the newsletter.

Fly of the Month – The Royal Treatment

Posted in General on December 10, 2010 by flyfishidaho

Joel LaFollete designed this beautiful fly as part of his Peacock Series of Steelhead flies.  The first time I tied this fly it looked like a steelhead fly that may be a little to artistic to be a practical fishing fly.  After further consideration I tied up two more, to add to my first fly, and took them to the Grand Ronde on my next outing.  After fishing through a few runs with my standard arsenal I brought this fly out of the clip-box.

I won’t BS you and try to convince you that the first time I cast it I hooked up but I did notice the fly had all the character of great steelhead flies:  great profile, great color, swims well in the water, etc.

I think on top of everything else, it looks beautiful and it also looks like it takes hours to tie.  That simply isn’t the case.  The choice of peacock sword for throat and wing give it a very ‘rich’ look with significantly less effort at the vice than you would imagine.

The Royal Treatment

Posted in Special Events on November 15, 2010 by Greg Harris

Fly Fishers of Idaho in a joint project with Idaho Fish & Game, Boise Parks & Rec, Trout Unlimited, and others installed new signs along a portion of the river that outline special fishing regulations.  A big thanks goes out to the crew that was able to help install the signs this past Saturday.

October Fish-Out and Road Side Clean Up

Posted in Fish Outs, Special Events on November 3, 2010 by Greg Harris

A big thank you goes out to Brian Sulgrove, Don Sulgrove, & Don Sherron for tackling the fall road side clean up for FFI.  As an organization FFI has committed to two road side clean ups each year.  While we had a fairly good size group help complete the spring clean up, only these three gentlemen attended the fall clean up.

Great work guys & thank you.

Steelhead Dreams – Catch Magazine

Posted in General on November 3, 2010 by Greg Harris

Make sure you check out T-Motion Theater in the current issue of Catch MagazineSteelhead Dreams is great story about steelhead fishing in northern BC that is beautifully shot by Todd Moen.  This is part one of a two part series and waiting until January 1, 2011 to see part two is going to be tough, but if part two is anything like part one it will be a great way to start the new year.

The video is a little over eleven minutes long so lock yourself in your tying room or the garage or the bathroom (if your wireless internet works in there) as to not be disturbed and enjoy this short film of steelhead bliss.

October Fish-Out & Road Clean-Up

Posted in Fish Outs, Special Events on October 13, 2010 by Greg Harris
As a reminder this Saturday, October 16, FFI will be completing the second of our two road clean-ups this year as part of our Adopt-a-Highway project.  We have adopted a two mile section of Highway 20 (mile marker 113 – 115).

If you would like to car pool or caravan to the location we will be departing from the TA Truck Stop/Boise Travel Center #167 at the Broadway Exit (exit #54) at precisely 8:30AM.  Don Sherron has coordinated with the Highway Department and he will be bringing the trash bags & safety vests.  If you can attend please bring the following:

  • Gloves
  • Duct Tape (to seal the bags closed)
  • Poker Stick (optional / the claw type pickers are available at Harbor Freight for about $4.00)

Many of those who attend will also be fishing the South Fork of the Boise after the clean-up, so please feel free to bring your fishing gear.  Below is a fishing report from 10/12 courtesy of the Trout Lie:

“In other news, the South Fork of the Boise’s been a broken record – great hatches from mid-morning till dusk. However, getting the drop on fish has been a little tough with the July-type weather we’ve been having. The river’s producing a good number of PMDsPink Cahills, and Flavs throughout the day. Once it cools down a bit, look for increasing BWO numbers and a few more October Caddis.”
