Fly Fishing Road Show & Tying Seminar – Feb. 13 – 15

Jack Dennis & Phil Rowley will be presenting the Fly Fish Road Show this weekend (February 13 & 14) from 9:00am – 6:00pm.   They will also be doing a Fly Tying seminar on February 15 from 8:00 – 6:00pm.  Both events will be held at the Cambria Suites Boise Airport (2970 W Elder St).

“…Give us a weekend and we and we will help get rid of those winter blues and show you what you’re missing. Jack Dennis and Phil Rowley will be presenting teaching seminars on how to improve your fly fishing skills. A variety of subjects will be covered including streamer fishing, matching the hatch, Euro nymph fishing, fishing lakes and many more. On both days there will be different programs throughout the day. Each program will be less an hour with a break.”

February FFI Updates

Just as the temperatures are starting to heat up outside so are things at FFI, we have a number of events,activities, & changes to update you on.  Below are a few of the highlights:

  • The 2010 Fish-Out schedule has been released.  Please click here to check it out.
  • The password to access The Flyline & the fishing buddy list has changed.  Members who have paid their 2010 dues have been e-mailed the new password.  If you haven’t received the new password and you have paid your 2010 dues please shoot me an e-mail.
  • Our next FFI meeting will be on Thursday, February 18th in the Trophy Room of the F&G headquarters.  Tying will start at 6:30 and the regular meeting will start at 7:00.
  • The Fly Fishing Film Tour will be in Boise on Saturday, February 20th.  The doors open at 6:30pm at the Egyptian Theatre.  Discount tickets can be purchased at Idaho Angler.
  • We are looking for volunteers to man the FFI booth at the Sportsman’s Show that will be held on March 4 -7.  If you can help please shoot us an e-mail with the days & times you would be available.  At our meeting on 02/18 we will review the schedule and lock down times.
  • We will also need your help with gathering enough flies to fill up our “Big Fish” that is raffled off at the Sportsman Show.  Please bring any flies that you would like to donate to the meeting on 02/18.
  • Due to a scheduling conflict with F&G our March meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 16th in the auditorium at the MK Nature Center.

We also have two new members on the FFI board of directors.  Arvis Haskins & Don Sulgrove have agreed to serve on the board.  They will be filling the seats previously held by Paul Axness & Duane Treat.  Please join us in welcoming Arvis & Don to the board and thanking Paul & Duane for all they have done for FFI while serving on the board.

Free Fly Tying Class

Here is a great opportunity for either beginner fly tiers or to brush up on your tying techniques. Lifetime FFI member Leon Doar will be offering a free fly tying class to FFI members starting in February.  The class size will be limited to five to ten people so sign up early.

Class Details

Date: Begins on Wednesday, February 3 and will run every Wednesday thereafter for five to eight weeks

Location: Idaho Fish & Game HQ (600 Walnut St, Boise in the lunch room adjacent to the Trophy Room)

Class size: Minimum – five / Maximum – ten

Additional details: First night will be orientation and details on materials/tools that will need to be purchased (estimated at $50.00)

Registration: You must register prior to the course.  Please call Don Sherron @ 577-0543 to register

Spey Clave Boise – August 29

speyMichael L. Bantam; DreamCastIdaho.com, a Fly Fishing & Casting Workshop School; and SpeyClaveBoise.com are sponsoring the first annual Spey Clave Boise gathering to be held on Saturday, August 29 from 9:00am – 5:00pm at Ann Morrison City Park in Boise.

Spey Clave Boise is an open invitation to spey casters, spey enthusiasts, and the community to visit with vendors, rod manufacturers, fly shops, guides, fly tiers, & professional spey caster from throughout the Nothwest.

Gone Fishing

gonefishingWe’re going to take a bit of a hiatus and actually try to get out and doing some fishing rather than just talking about.  It isn’t going to be a long break so please make sure you check back around June 22nd for new updates.

In the meantime check out one of the many things happening over the next ten days.

-          June 13 & 14: FFI Brownlee Reservoir Fish-Out

-          June 13: South Fork of the Boise River clean up.  Planned meeting time is between 8:00 – 9:00AM at the Reclamation Village area across from the Village boat ramp (Reclamation Village is about two miles below Anderson Ranch Dam).  Prizes awarded for the most trash picked up & the strangest item found.  Please RSVP by email or phone to mtoalson@cableone.net or 899-8612 and provide your email & phone if you can make it so they can get a headcount for refreshments and lunch.  Please wear long pants and shirt, gloves recommended, & good footwear. All tools and supplies will be provided by US Forest Service but you are welcome to bring your own.

-          The Trout Lie has posted a new fishing report as of June 11th.  Sounds like the Brown Drakes are heating on Sliver Creek.

-          Check out Greg Montemurro’s article on the Anatomy of the Refusal.

-          According to an article is today’s Idaho Statesman Idaho Fish & Game is shutting down the spring Chinook season on the North Fork of the Clearwater & from the mouth of the Clearwater River to the Orofino Bridge as of tonight.

FFI Picnic

FFI will be holding our annual club picnic on June 19th.  The picnic will replace our June members meeting.  The club will provide the burgers, dogs, and condiments.  We ask that members whose last names begin with the letters A – M bring a side dish and members whose last name begins with the letters N – Z bring a dessert.

Please join us for an afternoon of fun.
