October Fish-Out and Road Side Clean Up
Posted in Fish Outs, Special Events on November 3, 2010 by Greg HarrisA big thank you goes out to Brian Sulgrove, Don Sulgrove, & Don Sherron for tackling the fall road side clean up for FFI. As an organization FFI has committed to two road side clean ups each year. While we had a fairly good size group help complete the spring clean up, only these three gentlemen attended the fall clean up.
Great work guys & thank you.
October Fish-Out & Road Clean-Up
Posted in Fish Outs, Special Events on October 13, 2010 by Greg HarrisIf you would like to car pool or caravan to the location we will be departing from the TA Truck Stop/Boise Travel Center #167 at the Broadway Exit (exit #54) at precisely 8:30AM. Don Sherron has coordinated with the Highway Department and he will be bringing the trash bags & safety vests. If you can attend please bring the following:
- Gloves
- Duct Tape (to seal the bags closed)
- Poker Stick (optional / the claw type pickers are available at Harbor Freight for about $4.00)
Many of those who attend will also be fishing the South Fork of the Boise after the clean-up, so please feel free to bring your fishing gear. Below is a fishing report from 10/12 courtesy of the Trout Lie:
“In other news, the South Fork of the Boise’s been a broken record – great hatches from mid-morning till dusk. However, getting the drop on fish has been a little tough with the July-type weather we’ve been having. The river’s producing a good number of PMDs, Pink Cahills, and Flavs throughout the day. Once it cools down a bit, look for increasing BWO numbers and a few more October Caddis.”

Idaho Sportsman Show Raffle Winners
Posted in Special Events on March 23, 2010 by Greg HarrisDale Reynolds & Dennis Nunez were the Fly Fishers of Idaho raffle winners at the Idaho Sportsman Show held on March 4 – 7. We want to thank everyone that purchased a raffle ticket and/or stopped by the booth during the show.
Dennis and his father stopped by the booth and joined FFI during the show. At the same time they purchased a couple of raffle tickets. Dennis won the “Big Fish” that is adorned with flies tied by or purchased by members of FFI. We would love to tell you how many flies were actually on the “Big Fish”, but we couldn’t get anyone to actually sit down and count them all. All we can say is that Dennis should have enough flies to get him through the next year or two and in about any kind of fishing situation.
Dale Reynolds won the Sage Z-Axis four piece, five weight rod with a Greys reel and additional spools. Dale and his family decided to join FFI when they came to pick up their prize during the March FFI meeting.
Congratulations to the winners and we look forward to seeing you all at the Sportman Show next year.
Wild Trout & Clean Water Rally – February 25
Posted in Special Events on February 22, 2010 by Greg HarrisEveryone loves to talk about protecting the resource for future generations and allowing our kids a chance to chase native fish, well here’s your chance to do something about it. Please take a minute to read the release below from the Sierra Club, Idaho Rivers United, et al about Bull Trout protection proposed by the US Fish & Wildlife Service and how you can support them.
“Bull trout, an Idaho native, are threatened with extinction. The US Fish and Wildlife Service released a revised critical habitat rule for bull trout that would protect thousands of miles of rivers and lakes in five states of the Pacific Northwest. The Sierra Club, along with our conservation partners, supports the FWS proposal because it will help protect our healthy rivers and forest habitat, clean drinking water and wild trout. The bull trout is well known as an indicator species of the larger negative effects from climate change on fish habitats and what is good for bull trout is good for other species like cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, salmon, steelhead, birds, and wildlife.
Boise is the ONLY scheduled public hearing. Activists from all over the country are looking to the people of Idaho to come out and support this historic protection of fisheries of the northwest. Please make it a priority and come!
Please attend our WILD TROUT AND CLEAN WATER RALLY at 6:15pm at the Boise Centre, the hearing will follow. We’ll have fish theatre, “fish sticks”, music and more. Bring the kids and the whole family! They’ll have a blast.
And at 7:00pm, we’ll move inside for the official hearing where you’ll be able to comment about your support for clean, cold water. This is a very important event to protect our lakes, rivers and aquatic wildlife. Please come of February 25th!
Thanks for caring about our rivers and questions contact Jessica at (208) 384-1023 or Jessica.ruehrwein@sierraclub.org
Some additional things that you can do today:
1. The most important thing you can do is attend the Trout Rally at 6:15 this Thursday. Spread the word. Use Facebook to invite your friends.
2. Volunteer at the Grove on Feb. 25. Shifts start at 3:30, 5:30 and 6:45. Work includes gathering petition signatures, helping with displays and directions.
3. At 7:00 p.m. on Thursday testify at the hearing. Everyone has a chance to make a short comment.
4. Submit comments in writing by March 15. Visit www.sierrasportsmen.org for talking points and details.
5. Write a letter to the editor of the Statesman supporting the FWS proposal and promoting healthy rivers. This needs to be done very soon. 200 words or less to editorial@idahostatesman.com“
For More Information:
State-by-state descriptions of the proposed critical habitat units, maps, photographs, general biological information and other materials relating to the proposed rule may be found at the US Fish & Wildlife’s bull trout website (link).
